Health accompaniment to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers

The Service of Interpretation and Intercultural Mediation (SIMI) for health and social care allows for the resolution of communication problems that arise when there are language and socio-cultural differences between health professionals and patients.Its objectives are to ensure that the access to information, rights and care is autonomous, as well as to enable decision-making with freedom and security.The team’s tasks are:

Accompanying patients in appointments, diagnostic tests and administrative procedures to enable communication with professionals and to inform them about the functioning of the health system.(Service request)

Follow-up of cases to encourage continuity of medical follow-up and adherence to treatment.

To train:

  • Intercultural mediators for languages less widely spoken.
  • Health professionals on management of cultural diversity and the professional figure of the interpreter-mediator.
  • Postgraduate students in traineeships of the Master’s Degree in Intercultural Communication, Translation and Interpreting in Public Services of the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Translation of the Universitat Jaume I.

A pioneering service in the Community of Madrid

The Spanish National Health System is characterized by a high organizational complexity and communication exchanges full of technicalities.Foreign-born people who do not speak the language of the country they are in or who are unfamiliar with the functioning and procedures of the system experience constant difficulties in accessing care and treatment.

Our Service of Intercultural Mediation and Interpreting is a pioneering service in the Community of Madrid. Its importance is recognized and endorsed by the Ministry of Health and it has the support of the Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Médicos de Madrid (ICONEM) [Illustrious Official College of Physicians of Madrid].

The team consists of more than 30 interpreters and mediators (staff and collaborators) who work with more than 20 languages of interpretation and are specialized in the field of public services.
