Promoting understanding and coexistence between cultures through health

Salud Entre Culturas (SEC) is a multidisciplinary public health and migration team that is part of the Asociación para el Estudio de las Enfermedades Infecciosas (Association
for the Study of Infectious Diseases or AEEI).

The AEEI was created in 1991 and declared of Public Utility in 2003. It is associated with the Infectious Diseases Service of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid.

Goals

  • Inform a particularly vulnerable group, from a medical and social point of view, about the most relevant infectious diseases and thus enable them to adopt preventive behaviours and reduce attitudes conditioned by stigma.
  • Train the voluntary and professional staff of NGOs to achieve effective communication that manages to transmit health information to the immigrant population.
  • Promote early diagnosis of HIV and Chagas disease.
  • Train healthcare professionals in managing cultural diversity.
  • To offer intercultural mediation and language interpretation services in the healthcare field.

New citizens, New patients

Health education program focused on the migrant population settled in Spain. We carry out culturally and linguistically adapted health education activities. Sometimes, these activities include a community screening for diseases such as hepatitis or tuberculosis.

Silent diseases

Program to prevent and promote the early diagnosis of HIV, hepatitis, chagas disease and sickle cell disease through screening campaigns in community settings. This program includes health education activities and the subsequent referral of the detected cases to the health system.

Building bridges

Patient assistance program in which we help them overcome cultural and linguistic barriers to the health system, follow up with them, and encourage continuity of medical control and adherence to treatment. We also train new intercultural mediators to continue and expand this service.

Women's health

Program aimed specifically at women in which we address the barriers arising from the intersection of gender and migration. We work on issues related to health education with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive rights.

Transcultural psychology

Psychosocial care program in which we carry out a comprehensive approach working on psycho-emotional problems related to the migration process, adaptation to the new context and/or a diagnosis of a chronic pathology. We also train and sensitize health professionals who care for migrant patients.

01 dr rogelio lopez velez

Dr. Rogelio López-Vélez

Director

He has dedicated his professional career to imported infectious diseases and the health of migrants since 1989 when he launched the Tropical Medicine Unit at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid. He is currently a researcher at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria (Institute for Health Research) of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid.

Ignacio Peña Ruiz

Coordinator

Degree in Political Science and Administration by the UCM [Universidad Complutense de Madrid].Master’s degree in Development Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Latin
America by the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Expert in direction and
management of NGOs by ESADE. He has been an aid worker in Ecuador, participating in programs of UNDP, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation
(AECID) and other cooperation agencies. His experience is extensive in the design, monitoring and evaluation of socio-health projects involving migrants. He has participated in various scientific publications in collaboration with the National Reference Centre for Imported Tropical Diseases of the Infectious Diseases Service of
the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid. He is a teacher in various courses and training programs that address intercultural mediation and the migration phenomenon in
public services. Since 2013, he has been the coordinator of Salud Entre Culturas.

Martina Corral Aller

Head of the Intercultural Interpretation and Mediation Service

Degree in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Vigo with specific training in Public Services Interpretation. Over the last few years, she has been trained in interculturality, intercultural mediation and in mediation techniques as a method of conflict resolution. She has also completed studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology.

Cristina Arcas Noguera

Head of the Health Care Division

Nurse and Social and Cultural Anthropologist by the Universidad de Granada. Diploma in Tropical Nursing by LSHTM. Expert in European Project Management by PIXEL-Florence. Currently studying MSc in Gender Studies by the University of Linköping.
She has participated in health promotion, health education and sexual and reproductive
health programs with migrant population in Greece. Since 2018, she has been the head
of the health care division at Salud Entre Culturas.

Layla Bellach Elkasimi

Interpreter and intercultural mediator

Degree in Semitic and Islamic Studies by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Intercultural mediator of Classical Arabic, Maghrebi Arabic, Eastern Arabic and Riffian in the health field. Training in Dual Pathology and Addictive and Gender Violence Disorders in Immigrant Women.

Emmanuela Beda

Interpreter and intercultural mediator

Intercultural mediator in French, Bambara, and other African languages such as Twi. She is a former student of our Course on Intercultural Mediation in Public Services, which is part of our project School of Intercultural Mediation in Public Services.

Communicator and audiovisual content creator. Certified pedagogical and didactic training by the UNED. Over the last few years, she has specialized in social media, as well as in content creation and campaigns for non-profit social entities.

Diploma en Competencia Cultural para el Cuidado y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Mediadora intercultural en el ámbito sanitario, especializada en árabe clásico, árabe magrebí y árabe oriental.
